The War Memorial Chapel was not included in the original
plans for the Washington National Cathedral, but was added to the interior structure
after WWII. The needlepoint kneelers, created by women from England including Elizabeth,
the Queen Mother, were given to the Cathedral in thanksgiving for American assistance
during the war. On a side wall of the chapel hangs a needlepoint tapestry depicting the
seals of the states, in order of admission to the Union, on a symbolic Tree of Life.
Around the tree are the Great Seal of the United States and the shields of the various
branches of the armed forces. Across the bottom are white crosses to honor those who
died while serving in the military during the war.
