Explain the goals and interests of the Harlem Renaissance. Refer to one example to illustrate your points.

The Harlem renaissance was an American cultural movement
that occurred in the early twentieth century. Fueled by their newfound freedom African
Americans in the north, specifically New York City used the Harlem renaissance to
redefine what it meant to be Black. The renaissance aimed to form a new black community
and identify. An identify based on the artistic, intellectual, and cultural traits of
African Americans which made them unique. The Harlem Renaissance helped to both unify
blacks, and distinguish them as an intellectually and culturally active community. The
renaissance also has roots and in the culture of African Ancestors of American
slaves.


The works of such figures as Langston
Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston helped to embody the sentiment and goals of the
renaissance. These authors created and new black narrative and gave blacks and
intriguing and complex voice.


All these effects of the
Harlem Renaissance helped to lay the foundation for the American Civil Rights Movement,
African American culture today.
