Nobody “Bod” Owens
goes to a pawn shop to try and collect money to make a grave marker for Liza Hempstock,
a witch buried in Potter’s Field. His adopted mother warns him not to go that part of
the cemetery because in her words, “you will catch your death.” Of course, he goes
anyway where he meets Liza and learns of her despair of not having a head stone. He
resolves to make her one by making a trade at the pawn shop. However, the pawn shop
owner realizes the boy has something extremely valuable and he wants to know the origins
of the item so he locks him in a room. Liza uses her magic to help Bod
escape.
