What environmental issue was targeted in Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring? What was outcome of her efforts?

Rachel Carson's message was about the potential
environmental damage from use of pesticides. She was particularly concerned about the
long-term effects of pesticides, which were unknown at the time she was writing. She
aimed her message at the average citizen rather than at
scientists.

Silent Spring is widely credited with being one
of the major forces that created the environmental movement in America. The book was
published in 1962, and US President John F Kennedy soon tasked his Science Advisory
Council to study the allegations that were made in the book. Their report put Washington
on the path toward a number of pieces of environmental legislation, most notably the
outright banning of the pesticide DDT.
