This scene is the first time that the craftsmen meet in
the woods to rehearse their play. Bottom continues to show himself as an arrogant
know-it-all, who spends some time finding the perfect location for the rehearsal, and
then tells Quince that two Prologues will be needed so that the ladies in the audience
will not get scared due to the Lion or the sword scene. The craftsmen discuss how they
are going to incorporate the wall and moonlight into the play, and then they finally
begin rehearsing.
At this stage, Puck enters, invisibly. He
is concerned that they are too near Titania who is sleeping and make wake her. He plans
on causing mischief, and sees his opportunity when Bottom exits the "stage" and Puck
gives him the head of an ass. When he re-enters the "stage," the other actors run away
terrified.
Bottom is left alone and begins to sing to
himself to stop himself feeling afraid. His song wakes Titania, who, since she has been
annointed with the juice from the magic flower, falls in love with him. She summons her
fairies to attend to him and he engages in smalltalk with them as they appear and are
introduced.
