Mixed Media is a technique that
incorporates multiple visual arts together. This is not to be confused with the term
multimedia art, which makes use of both visual and non-visual
elements.
Since the 1970s the creative approach to the use
of several visual forms has been popular; for instance, one artist named Bea Nettles has
developed mixed-media photographic pieces dealing with women's identity and
domesticity. In one of her black and white photographs, she incorporates three
different pictures. Some of her photographs she combines with portraits that have been
painted.
Another young artist, Michelle Caplan, uses
photographs and newspaper clippings and designs cut from construction paper. After
pasting them to the canvas, the artist then takes a photograph of the entire
canvas.
These mixed media forms can take the form of a
collage which usually has many, many photographs mixed onto one
surface.
