There are actually several main conflicts in Rodman
Philbrick's teen novel, Freak the Mighty. One conflict comes in the
many problems that Kevin and Max face when they team up as Freak the Mighty, the oddest
couple in their school. They become targets of scorn and derision, and they even have to
deal with Tony D., aka Blade, and his gang, who terrorize the boys whenever they meet.
But the primary conflict comes when Max's father, "Killer" Kane, is released from jail
and kidnaps his son. Max has long feared meeting up with his father, and he has no wish
to join him on his planned cross-country travels. Just when things appear to be at their
worst, Kevin comes to the rescue, spraying Max's father with a homemade pepper spray and
freeing Max. The final conflict comes when Max has to deal with Kevin's sudden
death.
