A Parsi educator and statesman, Dadabhai
Naoroji
(1825-1917) continues to be remembered as the "Grand Old Man of
India." He was the first Asian to become a Member of Parliament, serving in the British
House of Commons from 1892-1895. He was a co-founder of the Indian National Congress,
and his book, Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, focused on
India's loss of wealth to Great Britain. He formed the first Indian company to be
established in England in 1855, and later began his own company, Naoroji & Co.,
specializing in the trade of cotton. He became a professor at University College in
London and served as Prime Minister of Baroda in 1874. He was a mentor of Mohandas
Gandhi.
