The Two Minutes Hate is a pivotal moment in Part One in
that the reader begins to understand the inner desires of the main character Winston.
Before the emotional outburst of hate which is designed to unify the party members in
their love of Big Brother and hate for Emmanuel Goldstein, a symbol for all that is
against Big Brother, Winston has given clues to his inner struggle. He has written a
diary, strictly forbidden, and is questioning a photograph which he believes proves lies
told by the government. This allows him to be drawn to the dark haired girl, who he
believes holds the same level of disillusionment that he does. After the ceremony,
Winston begins to take his inner doubts to an external level by talking with Julia,
arranging for a love next in a prole neighborhood and taking steps to join the
underground movement in support of Goldstein.
It is ironic
that these feelings gain momentum during the Two Minutes Hate, which is designed to
secure unity among the citizens. However, Winston's reaction is to act against the
Party, which ultimately fails.
