Shortland Street, the long-running
New Zealand prime time drama series, revolves around the private and professional lives
of the main characters who work at Shortland Street Hospital. By nature of the
storyline itself, the main theme of every episode is in some form
or fashion, relationships, love, and/or sexuality.
This
show has been both praised and criticized for its tendency to constantly push the social
envelope and feature scenes, details, and story-lines which may be considered
controversial, such as non-traditional sexual relationships, professionally
inappropriate relationships, and graphic depiction of other mature
content.
In order to complete your assignment, I encourage
you to watch just one episode of the show and focus on the regular characters (those who
work at the hospital or their immediate relatives). Whether you choose to focus on a
more traditional concept of "love" and whether or not it exists, or simply go with what
is presented and write your own review of how love is depicted on screen, you certainly
will not lack for availability of material.
