How does Tom feel when he looks between his legs down onto Lexington Avenue?

It is at this precise moment, as Tom grasps the corner of
the paper and looks between his legs down onto Lexington Avenue, that he grasps the
enormity of his situation.  Before this time, his only focus has been to regain the
fruit of his work - his safety hasn't really been a concern.  When he looks down as
visualizes his precarious position, though, the full danger in which he has put himself
gives him near-paralyzing terror.
