There are many works of American and British literature
they are excellent subjects for gender studies. Certainly the writings of Sylvia Plath
are considered important feminist works, because of her independent attitude and
interest in strong female personae in the voices of her writing. Virginia Woolf is
another writer whose work is associated with feminist and gender studies, due to her
interest in gender identity (as in the novel Orlando), her portrayal of female
friendships (as in Mrs. Dalloway) or her belief in the importance of female points of
view (as in A Room of One's Own). But there are many more female fiction writers whose
works are appropriate for a discussion of gender studies: Margaret Atwood, Kate Chopin,
Alice Walker, Elizabeth Bowen, Joyce Carol Oates, A. S. Byatt, and
others.
