What are some good discussion questions that could be used for Chapter 5 of The Secret Life of Bees?

You might want to use some of the following questions as
ideas to develop your own questions. Obviously, the place to start is by re-reading
chapter five and making a note of any interesting facts or intriguing plot elements
there are. Such details can provide the basis for a number of interesting discussion
questions. Here are some examples to help get you
started.

1) Honey is said to be something that Lily and
August and her sisters "lived for," and is used for a range of purposes. Why is honey so
important to the household and what might it symbolise? How is it used
symbolically?

2) Why do you think June does not like Lily
being in the house with them so much?

3) Explain Lily's
feelings as a white girl as she hears reports on the news of racially motivated
violence.

4) Why do you think the sisters call the statue
"Our Lady of Chains"? What does this statue symbolise? How is it important to the
sisters?

5) Summarise the history of May and how she came
to be the way she is in the novel. Why do we respond so differently to traumatic events
in our lives?

Hope this is enough to get you started!
Enjoy!
